Lara is the Warprize

A powerful healer, she has sworn an oath of loyalty to Keir the Warlord, and his people. Now the Warlord and his chosen mate face enemies within the tribe and danger lurks on every hand as they journey toward Keir's homeland.

When they reach a village marked with the warnings of the plague, Keir forbids Lara to heal the sick, commanding that she not risk her own life. But both Lara and Kier are strong of will and neither will bend easily, even for love; and when Lara disobeys, she pays the price: both she and Kier are plague-struck... and so is their entire encampment.

In the midst of the dying, Iften, a rival warrior, gathers his followers and challenges Keir for the right to rule their tribe. If Keir, weakened by the sickness, loses -- he dies.

And so does Lara.

To save her love, her life, and her adopted people, Lara must find a cure for the plague -- and fully embrace her sworn role as Warprize to her Warlord.

From Booklist
In a fascinating sequel to Warprize (2005), Lara, the Queen of Xy, and Kier, warlord of the Firelanders, are on the way to his people's homeland. When scouts report that a walled village of the Xy has denied them entry, Kier and his troops are ready to annihilate the village. Lara intervenes, and discovers that a plague has killed nearly everyone inside. When she begins to sicken, Kier helps heal her. As the plague hits the entire army encampment, taking hundreds of lives, Kier's second conspires to displace him. Readers will be delighted to learn more of the customs of this unique civilization, and they will enjoy the growing love between Lara and Kier. It is refreshing for the conflict in a romance to eschew petty misunderstandings and present, instead, life-and-death situations through which together the hero and heroine become stronger. The emphasis is on the emotional rather than the physical in Vaughan's unusual and thoroughly enjoyable tale. Diana Tixier Herald

Can I just assume "head injury" is a character motivation? Something happened here.
By RB
I loved the first book in this series. In the world of romance, especially fantasy romance, it's such a crapshoot. The overwhelming majority of stories are dreadful, frankly. But this story was quite endearing in many ways. The characters, while typically romance-adorable, had echoes of Diana Gabaldon's characters, with enough realism to make them sort of believable (inside the realm of romance!). Wareprize is a terrific novel with pretty good pacing.

This second book, however, made me somewhat insane. I can't understand an entire book being written in such a disheartening setting. And how in the world did the author believe that her main character would do such ridiculous things that resulted in unrelenting sadness...as the senselessly poor decisions mounted, followed by senselessly depressing deaths of some great secondary characters, I found myself wanting to toss the Kindle. What in the world happened here? I finally finished it mostly because I enjoyed my own loud exclamations of irritation--great outlet! There could have been MANY possible conflict scenarios that didn't require a main character to literally become stupid. Otherwise, her motivation for such actions could only be arrogance, but that was never stated or even implied. It was unbelievably frustrating. Of course characters make mistakes, but that's not what was presented to us in this book. This was a character motivation change that made little sense. And the entire novel is based on this--oh no. Hide the sharp objects!

I really don't like being so critical of someone's writing like this. But when I've made an emotional investment in characters that then get pushed into contortions that don't make sense, it makes me crazy. I'm not looking forward to the next book as much as I was.

Very very good story
By Boubidou
The author is very successful in her tell, to make me feel like I'm part of the story.
The characters are all well depicted.
The plot is thickening more and more Keir and Lara approached the plains... although the cause of their delay in this book is deathly serious. Also I must say it was a very high emotional one, and my eyes licked more than one.
However the author has a nack to know how to bring some very intense and emotional moments in middle of crisis, like hope and joy of life for those people, who are discovering for the first time an impressive but invisible enemy.
Very good sequel... already on my way to read the next one
Totally recommend

A story were a lot of problems rear their ugly heads, but no solutions are found
By Mithrendiel
Argh! What went wrong here? I loved Warprize - it was fun, romantic, and left me feeling all warm and happy reading it. Warsworn is a very different kind of story - I found it a painful, frustrating, and downright difficult read. It suffers from the classic love story second book syndrome in which the main romance leads fight, bicker, and generally struggle. Fortunately we are not forced to suffer through a painful breakup (ala New Moon), but Keir and Lara are at each other's throats through much of this book. They could both due with a good lesson in the glorious arts of listening and communicating. Kind of relationship cornerstones, don't ya think? *grumbles*

The pain I felt reading this book was compounded by a basic shift in Lara's character archetype. I loved her in Warprize. She was strong, but also vulnerable. She spoke her mind, but was wise enough to know when to listen. In Warsworn she somehow morphs into a less than likeable character. She is senselessly stubborn, stupidly opinionated, arrogant, and a bit selfish. She makes poor strategic decisions that endanger everyone and everything she holds dear. It would be easy to make a case that every bad thing that happened in Warsworn could be laid at her feet (and a LOT of bad things happen).

Here's the real kicker for me - the thing that had me shouting at my kindle in frustration more than once (yes, I talk to my protagonists when they acting in asinine fashions - I'm crazy like that) - Lara flat out failed to catch onto clues on what I strongly suspect was a cure to the plague. She had all the information she needed to find an herbal solution from the start, but she didn't see it - at ANY point in the book. And so many suffered for it. Maybe I'm wrong, but would it have hurt to try using lavender on people? Gah! It's basic troubleshooting - what is the one different factor between the people that caught the plague and those that didn't? Consistent contact with lavender thanks to dealing with the baby (I'm trying not to spoil anything here). Argh!

Le sigh. The book isn't all bad - the action definitely keeps pace. It's even more edge-of-your-seat, bite-your-finger-nails than Warprize. But my frustration with the decisions made by Lara, and the things she failed to notice in the story made me want to skim pages in hopes of getting to the place where she finally got a clue (that's at about 75% of the book for those of you wondering and even there I was still left feeling frustrated thanks to the lavender thing I mentioned above).

I could also make the argument that some of the mistakes made (primarily by Lara) in this book were made to show character growth later on. After all, it's only through our mistakes that we learn and become better people, but understanding what the author was trying to do doesn't make reading this story any easier.

Warsworn is basically a book where a lot of bad things happen, and a lot of problems rear their ugly heads, but no solutions are found. I can hope it is setting us up for some great solutions in Warlord. While I could see myself happily re-reading Warprize, I don't think I'd be able to make myself pick up this book again.
