Good Information, Bad Format
By KF
This text does provide the information I expected and the contents are good from a public relations point of view. When looking at the cover, it looks more like a magazine which is what they attempted to do with the organization of the information. This is a poor structure for a textbook. With a magazine, it functions because it draws your eye to the advertisements but with a textbook, it is too busy. When studying a textbook, a student needs information to be formatted properly to retain it. I wouldn't recommend this textbook simply because of the formatting. Hopefully, the next edition will be organized in a way that is easier to follow.

Text for online class
By Kate's mom
Bought this book, "Used, Like new." Arrived sooner than expected. Condition is as promised. Turns out the text is an "Instructor Review" text, but it works just fine. For the price, I can't complain about anything.

Toward a Comparative Institutional Analysis, by Masahiko Aoki

Markets are one of the most salient institutions produced by humans, and economists have traditionally analyzed the workings of the market mechanism. Recently, however, economists and others have begun to appreciate the many institution-related events and phenomena that have a significant impact on economic performance. Examples include the demise of the communist states, the emergence of Silicon Valley and e-commerce, the European currency unification, and the East Asian financial crises.

In this book Masahiko Aoki uses modern game theory to develop a conceptual and analytical framework for understanding issues related to economic institutions. The wide-ranging discussion considers how institutions evolve, why their overall arrangements are robust and diverse across economies, and why they do or do not change in response to environmental factors such as technological progress, global market integration, and demographic change.

Review

In this book Professor Aoki does a remarkable job of animating recent developments in the theory of contracts and institutions. This theory is used to explain the form and structure of diverse institutions, ranging from the regulation of irrigation systems in Tokugawa Japan to the rise of Silicon Valley. This book is an astounding achievement that is sure to become a classic.

(W. Bentley MacLeod, Professor of Economics and Law, University of Southern California)

This book has an outstanding intellectual sweep, covering game theory and abstract economics on the one hand, and a wide diversity of anthropological examples and illustrations from the real world, on the other.

(Kaushik Basu, Professor of Economics and Carl Marks Professor, Cornell University)

If the new institutional economics is to realize its promise, it must go beyond the description, insights, and hypotheses so far developed and turn them into a systematic theoretical framework. Masahiko Aoki's Towards a Comparative Institutional Analysis takes us a long way in doing just that.

(Douglass C. North, Department of Economics, University of Washington St. Louis)

Talking as Fast as I Can, by Lauren Graham

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • In this collection of personal essays, the beloved star of Gilmore Girls and Parenthood reveals stories about life, love, and working as a woman in Hollywood—along with behind-the-scenes dispatches from the set of the new Gilmore Girls, where she plays the fast-talking Lorelai Gilmore once again.

In Talking as Fast as I Can, Lauren Graham hits pause for a moment and looks back on her life, sharing laugh-out-loud stories about growing up, starting out as an actress, and, years later, sitting in her trailer on the Parenthood set and asking herself, “Did you, um, make it?” She opens up about the challenges of being single in Hollywood (“Strangers were worried about me; that’s how long I was single!”), the time she was asked to audition her butt for a role, and her experience being a judge on Project Runway (“It’s like I had a fashion-induced blackout”).

In “What It Was Like, Part One,” Graham sits down for an epic Gilmore Girls marathon and reflects on being cast as the fast-talking Lorelai Gilmore. The essay “What It Was Like, Part Two” reveals how it felt to pick up the role again nine years later, and what doing so has meant to her.

Some more things you will learn about Lauren: She once tried to go vegan just to bond with Ellen DeGeneres, she’s aware that meeting guys at awards shows has its pitfalls (“If you’re meeting someone for the first time after three hours of hair, makeup, and styling, you’ve already set the bar too high”), and she’s a card-carrying REI shopper (“My bungee cords now earn points!”).

Including photos and excerpts from the diary Graham kept during the filming of the recent Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life, this book is like a cozy night in, catching up with your best friend, laughing and swapping stories, and—of course—talking as fast as you can.

I smell snow...
By Emily
I wasn't originally going to review this book. The reasons being, to quote Chandler Bing, "are threefold": a. I love, love, love Lauren Graham; b. the book has some weird tangents that I can't in good conscience avoid mentioning c. I would never be able to bring myself to publicly critique this woman, who is an absolute genius, if I had truly negative things to say about the book (after all, I could never compromise my "reviewer's integrity").

Talking as Fast as I Can starts off extremely strongly, particularly if you listen to the audio (which highlights her acting abilities, including her singing...an added treat). The story begins as a memoir, discussing her upbringing and her jaunt into the wonderful world of acting. So far, so good. Lauren is self-deprecatingly hilarious and an extremely talented all-around artist, which includes a strong aptitude for writing. (Say what you will about the subject matter of the book, but Graham can write). Through the first section, about her early days as an actress in graduate school and then in a theater troupe, I was pleasantly engaged, with two thumbs up.

At that point, one of my thumbs started to waiver. The book, admittedly, takes some unexpected turns in the content department as it teeters between advice column, anecdotal essays, and personal stories, mostly out of chronological order. While it's fine to jump around in time - and it's fine to have a mixture of styles - the combination of styles and time periods is somewhat chaotic here. While I found the writing interesting and fun to hear, I was leaning towards not reviewing the book at this point... lest I not be able to give my girl, Lorelai, five well-earned stars.

Where Lauren starts to draw me back in is around the section that she discusses the importance of women lifting each other up and goes into a tale that focuses on giving advice to a younger generation. I will admit that, again, I wished I was reading more of a memoir, but her authenticity in this portion of the book is palpable. Lauren was twice a guest in the final season of "The Rosie O'Donnell Show," and she struck me then, in 2002 - as she did Rosie and later Ellen - as a true, down-to-earth, funny, kick-butt kind of gal (or something that sounds cooler than that but equally awesome). From those days forward (though I didn't get into Gilmore Girls and obviously Parenthood until much later), I knew I was a fan of Graham. Towards the back-half of the book, I started to recall that feeling: that she was my pal, decoupaging in the craft corner with Rosie.

When I knew, definitively, that I could give this book five stars (and mean it) is in the final section when Lauren discusses the Gilmore Girls revival. She is such a "real" person, and her account is so personal and touching. For fans of the show, this section alone makes Talking as Fast as I Can a must-have. Lauren is gracious and humble with an unbelievable work ethic and a positive attitude. Her stories might be slightly disjointed, but they're uplifting; they're positive; they're the kinds of life affirmations that so many of us need right now. Lauren is confident, self-aware, and legitimately nice... with a large dose of humor thrown in... and she's exactly the kind of role model - a person focused on the work before the glitz, glamour, fame, or fortune - that we should all be looking to for advice in today's world... a world filled with reality shows and Caviar dreams.

Sure, maybe her book is a little quirky. I like quirky. Quirky is a good thing.

So thank you Lauren for giving us a slice of your life and for pouring your heart into your characters that have touched so many of us over so many years. Thank you for being appreciative of your audience and for offering us guidance, taking us under your wing through this writing in a way that only you can.

Love, love
By Katrina Michelle De Vries
Love, love, love this!!! From the moment I started reading I am laughing out loud. I adore the fact that Lauren writes the way that she comes across in interviews. Someone who is funny, sharp and willing to make fun of herself. I loved the analysis of the golf ball that fell out of her car and the way that she tries to protect her personal life. Or the character that she develops to hide her old lady tendencies. Lauren Graham is an amazing writer and she is now on my list of people I would love to share a coffee and lunch with.

Like the soft voice of a friend over a casual ...
By Lisa M. Gott
It took me far too many years to get on the Gilmore Girls train, but once I finally did, boy did I become an instant fan for life. As such, I was extremely excited to read Lauren Graham’s new memoir, Talking as Fast as I can.

There are so many (wonderful) things I want to say about her book that it’s difficult to pinpoint exactly where to begin. Graham’s prose has an effortless, familiar feel to it. Like the soft voice of a friend over a casual cup of coffee. It’s obvious she’s a writer, and an extremely talented one at that.

One of the things I was worried about before I started reading was that it might only focus on her life as it related to Gilmore Girls. While that would have still been a thoroughly enjoyable read, fans (at least fans like me) read memoirs to learn about the real person and their real life. In learning about their lives, we feel as though we’ve left the world of fandom and entered the world of friendship. And Graham’s memoir delivers a perfect blend of personal and professional to us.

Talking as Fast as I can contains two large chapters where Graham recaps the actual filming experience of Gilmore Girls. The first, positioned near the beginning of the book, covers the original series, and the last, positioned near the end of the book, covers the revival. The remainder of the book follows Graham throughout her life from childhood to present. We learn a little about her family, about her upbringing and education, and, of course, about how she became the actress we love today. She’s witty, inspirational, and utterly entertaining.

But it’s more than just a simple sharing of random moments of her life. You can tell that each story, each chapter, each word has been chosen with care and caution. It’s neither too short nor too long; it is just perfect. As her agent had once told her after reviewing her first novel, there are some publishers who will buy and sell anything (whether it’s good or not) a celebrity writes just because they know it will sell. She refers to those kinds of books as “Monkey Doodles.” I can assure you this book is anything but a Monkey Doodle. This is a wonderful book. An eloquently written book. One every fan should read.

I came away from the book an even bigger fan. I’ve actually just started binging Parenthood and oh my… what a fantastic show. And I plan on reading her debut work of fiction, Someday, Someday, Maybe, as well as pretty much everything else she writes. Lauren is a warm and engaging woman who hasn’t let her success go to her head. And I’m very excited to see where her career and talents take her next.

If you’re a fan of Gilmore Girls or of Lauren herself, and even if you’re not, take a few hours a get to know this talented and wonderful human being. If you weren’t a fan of hers at the outset, you will be in the end.

Lara is the Warprize

A powerful healer, she has sworn an oath of loyalty to Keir the Warlord, and his people. Now the Warlord and his chosen mate face enemies within the tribe and danger lurks on every hand as they journey toward Keir's homeland.

When they reach a village marked with the warnings of the plague, Keir forbids Lara to heal the sick, commanding that she not risk her own life. But both Lara and Kier are strong of will and neither will bend easily, even for love; and when Lara disobeys, she pays the price: both she and Kier are plague-struck... and so is their entire encampment.

In the midst of the dying, Iften, a rival warrior, gathers his followers and challenges Keir for the right to rule their tribe. If Keir, weakened by the sickness, loses -- he dies.

And so does Lara.

To save her love, her life, and her adopted people, Lara must find a cure for the plague -- and fully embrace her sworn role as Warprize to her Warlord.

From Booklist
In a fascinating sequel to Warprize (2005), Lara, the Queen of Xy, and Kier, warlord of the Firelanders, are on the way to his people's homeland. When scouts report that a walled village of the Xy has denied them entry, Kier and his troops are ready to annihilate the village. Lara intervenes, and discovers that a plague has killed nearly everyone inside. When she begins to sicken, Kier helps heal her. As the plague hits the entire army encampment, taking hundreds of lives, Kier's second conspires to displace him. Readers will be delighted to learn more of the customs of this unique civilization, and they will enjoy the growing love between Lara and Kier. It is refreshing for the conflict in a romance to eschew petty misunderstandings and present, instead, life-and-death situations through which together the hero and heroine become stronger. The emphasis is on the emotional rather than the physical in Vaughan's unusual and thoroughly enjoyable tale. Diana Tixier Herald

"Vaughan's brawny barbarian romance re-creates the delicious feeling of adventure and the thrill of exploring mysterious cultures created by Robert E. Howard in his Conan books and makes for a satisfying escapist read with its enjoyable romance between a plucky, near-naked heroine and a truly heroic hero."--Booklist on Warprize

"The most entertaining book I've read all year."--All About Romance on Warprize

Can I just assume "head injury" is a character motivation? Something happened here.
By RB
I loved the first book in this series. In the world of romance, especially fantasy romance, it's such a crapshoot. The overwhelming majority of stories are dreadful, frankly. But this story was quite endearing in many ways. The characters, while typically romance-adorable, had echoes of Diana Gabaldon's characters, with enough realism to make them sort of believable (inside the realm of romance!). Wareprize is a terrific novel with pretty good pacing.

This second book, however, made me somewhat insane. I can't understand an entire book being written in such a disheartening setting. And how in the world did the author believe that her main character would do such ridiculous things that resulted in unrelenting sadness...as the senselessly poor decisions mounted, followed by senselessly depressing deaths of some great secondary characters, I found myself wanting to toss the Kindle. What in the world happened here? I finally finished it mostly because I enjoyed my own loud exclamations of irritation--great outlet! There could have been MANY possible conflict scenarios that didn't require a main character to literally become stupid. Otherwise, her motivation for such actions could only be arrogance, but that was never stated or even implied. It was unbelievably frustrating. Of course characters make mistakes, but that's not what was presented to us in this book. This was a character motivation change that made little sense. And the entire novel is based on this--oh no. Hide the sharp objects!

I really don't like being so critical of someone's writing like this. But when I've made an emotional investment in characters that then get pushed into contortions that don't make sense, it makes me crazy. I'm not looking forward to the next book as much as I was.

Very very good story
By Boubidou
The author is very successful in her tell, to make me feel like I'm part of the story.
The characters are all well depicted.
The plot is thickening more and more Keir and Lara approached the plains... although the cause of their delay in this book is deathly serious. Also I must say it was a very high emotional one, and my eyes licked more than one.
However the author has a nack to know how to bring some very intense and emotional moments in middle of crisis, like hope and joy of life for those people, who are discovering for the first time an impressive but invisible enemy.
Very good sequel... already on my way to read the next one
Totally recommend

A story were a lot of problems rear their ugly heads, but no solutions are found
By Mithrendiel
Argh! What went wrong here? I loved Warprize - it was fun, romantic, and left me feeling all warm and happy reading it. Warsworn is a very different kind of story - I found it a painful, frustrating, and downright difficult read. It suffers from the classic love story second book syndrome in which the main romance leads fight, bicker, and generally struggle. Fortunately we are not forced to suffer through a painful breakup (ala New Moon), but Keir and Lara are at each other's throats through much of this book. They could both due with a good lesson in the glorious arts of listening and communicating. Kind of relationship cornerstones, don't ya think? *grumbles*

The pain I felt reading this book was compounded by a basic shift in Lara's character archetype. I loved her in Warprize. She was strong, but also vulnerable. She spoke her mind, but was wise enough to know when to listen. In Warsworn she somehow morphs into a less than likeable character. She is senselessly stubborn, stupidly opinionated, arrogant, and a bit selfish. She makes poor strategic decisions that endanger everyone and everything she holds dear. It would be easy to make a case that every bad thing that happened in Warsworn could be laid at her feet (and a LOT of bad things happen).

Here's the real kicker for me - the thing that had me shouting at my kindle in frustration more than once (yes, I talk to my protagonists when they acting in asinine fashions - I'm crazy like that) - Lara flat out failed to catch onto clues on what I strongly suspect was a cure to the plague. She had all the information she needed to find an herbal solution from the start, but she didn't see it - at ANY point in the book. And so many suffered for it. Maybe I'm wrong, but would it have hurt to try using lavender on people? Gah! It's basic troubleshooting - what is the one different factor between the people that caught the plague and those that didn't? Consistent contact with lavender thanks to dealing with the baby (I'm trying not to spoil anything here). Argh!

Le sigh. The book isn't all bad - the action definitely keeps pace. It's even more edge-of-your-seat, bite-your-finger-nails than Warprize. But my frustration with the decisions made by Lara, and the things she failed to notice in the story made me want to skim pages in hopes of getting to the place where she finally got a clue (that's at about 75% of the book for those of you wondering and even there I was still left feeling frustrated thanks to the lavender thing I mentioned above).

I could also make the argument that some of the mistakes made (primarily by Lara) in this book were made to show character growth later on. After all, it's only through our mistakes that we learn and become better people, but understanding what the author was trying to do doesn't make reading this story any easier.

Warsworn is basically a book where a lot of bad things happen, and a lot of problems rear their ugly heads, but no solutions are found. I can hope it is setting us up for some great solutions in Warlord. While I could see myself happily re-reading Warprize, I don't think I'd be able to make myself pick up this book again.

Nicaragua's pride
By Y. MEDINA
Thanx to Sandino, Nicaragua could learn wahat independence means.
He was capable to oust yanks from his nation as you can read in this book. Later, heis killed by PRO-yank Somoza's dictatorship...which ruke until 1979 when sandinistas took power and gave it to the people. Nicaragua's life is for ever linked to this last name: "Sandino". Yes, this farmers son who worked in Mexico, was injected with a great love for his nation and when he returns to Nicaragua he prepares to die, to die fighting.
Sandino yesterday.... Sandino today... SANDINO FOR EVER
