Worth looking for

To anyone interested in the golden age of moviemaking, in special effects, or the art of this very specialized skill, this book will be a grand treat. The author knows his subject, and knows some of the images created by these artists are among the most powerful and indelible in the movies. Lavishly illustrated and quite thorough, "The Invisible Art" is a treasure trove of behind the scenes information, explanations, and dissections of the complicated process by which these fantasy environments and set extensions were realized. It's an expensive book (the softcover is slightly less pricey) but there has never been a film book like this, on this subject. Other special effects guides reference matte painting, but no one has ever analyzed the technique in this way. Films profiled include "King Kong" "Wizard of Oz" "Citizen Kane" "Thief of Bagdad" "Black Narcissus" and "Ten Commandments", among dozens of others. A wonderful job by someone who clearly cares for his subject.

At the very least, it makes a loveley coffee table book.

I purchased this book last year when I was taking a Digital Matte Painting class. I wanted to learn more about how it was accomplished during the golden age of cinema.

The pictures in this book are stunning! There are hundreds of before and after pictures, showing the original film and the glass plates separately.

They also take care to show all the various techniques used in Matte Painting... such as using a mirror to reflect the image, hanging a scaled model in the foreground, and even using a circular screen for a rotating background.

Sweet and uplifting.

This book was written in the 1930's so the languge is sometimes kind of old fashion, but the messages are sweet and uplifting. Followers of Unity spirituality should enjoy and appreciate this little book of letters from Myrtle Filmore. Some of them touched me in a very personal way.

A blessing for those suffering with Chronic Illness

I have read quite a few of the Unity brochures but for some reason had missed out on some of these letters. Living with a chronic health problem I found Mrs Fillmore's letters to be uplifting as well as hopeful. I'm going to see if they will provide me with some healing of my own. I feel blessed to have found these!

You can accomplish a lot of magic, one minute at a time.

I have always enjoyed the way that Terry Pratchett books can be enjoyed on many levels. On the surface, they are... cute. There's no other way to describe it. But dig just a tiny bit deeper and there is a world of intelligent commentary -- not HIDDEN from the mid-grade reader, just not bludgeoning them with "morality" or "ethics".

Vernon has accomplished the same trick with Castle Hangnail. On the first-level, it's a story about a little witch, a little castle, a little list of tasks to be accomplished. Molly is short and maybe a little pudgy, with fuzzy brown hair and brown eyes and decided opinions about gardening, food, and not wanting to be the Good Twin. She wants to be a Wicked Witch, but not an EVIL Witch, and she has a kind streak a mile wide, which is not at all the same thing as being Nice, or even Good. I feel like it's a loving nod at who Granny Weatherwax might have started out as, without being tediously derivative. Molly is herself.

I just handed this book to my 12 year old, who squealed and said, "YAY NEW URSULA." I'll append his review, but so far he has forgotten he has an open bag of Cheezits by his hand -- too busy reading.

On another level, Molly has a lot of grown-up problems. She is battling to be recognized as competent at her job, because she doesn't look like what people expect. She has impostor syndrome, and is pretty sure she is not qualified, even though she is managing all her tasks competently. And then there is the abusive friendship she has been in, where someone older and more powerful than she is has made her feel weak and powerless, and somehow to blame for that. I'm not saying a 12 year old will say, "hey, I'm in an abusive friendship", but I hope that sometime in their lives they will think of Molly saying "no!" and firmly stopping someone from making her feel bad. That would be a beautiful outcome.

I loved Molly, of course, in her kindness and flailing and willingness to really work at a problem. I also loved the Majordomo who has his own relationship traumas and angers to overcome. The supporting cast was all lovely and warm and individual, even Dragon the Donkey and the non-speaking characters. It was very much a story about community and mutuality.

The writing was wry and funny without being inaccessible for moderate readers. The illustrations, as one expects, are charming and just faintly creepy. The book as a whole is just.... lovely, and it makes me happy to have read it and happy to give it to my kids.

Read if: You like spunky, practical heroines. You are not on a medical regimen that prevents giggling.

Skip if: You are allergic to girl power or the thought that 12 year olds can change small parts of the world.

Great for younger advanced readers

My daughter has always read at a really high level for her age, and it's been a struggle to find books that are at a higher level yet not full of inappropriate subject matter. I guess I've really pretty much given up and she's now reading violent middle school books, but if this book had been around when she was, say, seven, it would have been perfect. There is very, very little violence and it is super mild, and of course it is to bad guys who clearly had it coming. Right and wrong are clearly delineated. No romance. But plenty to keep her excited. She actually just read this (she's nine), and she still liked it. Also while the hero is a "wicked witch," she is really concerned about right and wrong, and she feels bad about having lied at one point. The author makes the point repeatedly that she is a good person who wouldn't hurt anyone who didn't deserve it, and even then really all she does is kind of scare them. My daughter admitted that it's not a page-turning-keep-you-up-all-night-gotta-find-out-what-happens-next Brandon Mull type book, but she still liked it. She hopes it will be the first of a series.

I just wanted to write this to recommend it for younger readers who want a more advanced book but whose parents don't want all the "stuff" that can come with those. I read it as well and it's a really nice, sweet story.

When letters were dispatched to available wicked witches, wizards, sorcerers, mad scientists, vampires, and beast lords announcing an opening for a a new Master of the Castle at Castle Hangnail, the resident staff did not expect a twelve-year-old girl. Molly has one of the invitation letters, though, and insists she is a genuine wicked witch, and the minions don't want Castle Hangnail to get decommissioned for lack of a master by the Board of Magic, so...

When Molly starts making good progress on the required tasks to be confirmed as the new master, even the most skeptical of the minions, Major Domo, starts to become hopeful.

But Molly has some secrets lying in wait to trip them all up. Especially Molly. And when Molly's "old friend" turns up, thinks start to come unraveled.

This is a really fun tale of a talented and imaginative girl who is determined not to let anything stand in the way of her desire to practice her magic and be the witch that being the wicked twin in her family has made her--without hurting anyone who doesn't deserve it! Or possibly not even those that do deserve it. The plot moves, and I love the characters, especially Molly herself, Cook the Minotaur, and Bugbane the bat. Some of the more peripheral characters are fun, too.

Some will point out that this is a book intended for younger readers, to which I say, yes, what's your point? It's a lot of fun, and Tara Sands reads it very well and entertainingly.

Physical properties and chemical durability are described in detail. The physical properties include density, strength, shrinkage, and elasticity. Chemical durability includes resistance to acids, chloride ingress, carbonation, and freeze-thaw resistance. Fire resistance is also included, which is seldom considered, but is a very important aspect of the safety of the structure.

Microstructure development and its relation to the durability properties of LWAC generally are not highlighted in the literature. The development of bonds, the microstructure with different binder systems, and different types of lightweight aggregates are explained. They show how lightweight aggregate concrete differs from normal weight concrete. The chapters on chloride ingress and freeze-thaw resistance are detailed because of the use of LWAC in offshore construction.

The economical aspects of using LWAC are also reviewed. Emphasis is placed on the fact that although the cost of LWAC is high, the total cost of construction has to be considered, including the cost of transport, reinforcement, etc. When these are considered then LWAC becomes cheaper and attractive. The life cycle cost of the concrete is another consideration for calculating long-term savings on maintenance costs.

Valuable book for Materials Specialists

This is a comprehensive book that considers all aspects of lightweight aggregates and lightweight aggregate
concrete. The authors begin with a brief overview of the historical use of lightweight aggregate concrete, both naturally occurring and artificial, from ancient times to the present. This is followed by a summary of production facilities around the world, giving an indication of the amount of material produced per annum (although some of the figures are out of date). The various methods of manufacturing lightweight aggregates are covered in great detail; some processes are described in general terms while others are specifically related to particular products. The procedure for designing lightweight aggregate concrete mixes (both light-weight fines and with natural fines) is out-lined, although the actual proportions will obviously be a function of the specific materials used. Two chapters deal with the microstructure of lightweight aggregate concrete and the significant physical characteristics, such as shrinkage and creep. Subsequent chapters cover the important topics related to in-service behaviour of light-weight aggregate concrete. The first covers key areas of durability, such as alkali-aggregate reaction, carbonation, corrosion and chloride penetration. The authors deal extensively with these topics, giving data from both laboratory testing and field surveys. The information should help to dispel the common misconception that lightweight aggregate concrete is not as durable as `normal' concrete. A chapter is devoted to the important aspect of fire resistance, both of standard grades of concretes and high-strength/high-performance concretes. The final in-service behaviour topic considered is freeze-thaw resistance. The book concludes with a brief overview of applications of lightweight aggregate concrete in New Zealand, Scandinavia and the UK.
No mention is made of applications in North America, a curious omission in a book published in the USA. The main limitation of the book is that it concentrates on the properties of light-weight aggregates and of lightweight aggregate concrete. It pays little attention to the practicalities of the use of the material. Production, transportation, placing and finishing are covered in a very short chapter. Advantages and disadvantages are covered in only three pages, with a further three presenting a simplistic approach to the possible economies. In summary, this is a valuable book for materials specialists, but would probably be of little use to practicing engineers.

Terrific, post-Parachute guide to new laws of physics in a turbulent career universe

This is an outstanding book. The author points out that most of us fail to truly manage our careers. Instead, we "find one job in a row," approaching each new work life episode as an ad hoc transaction. But we need to replace transactions with relationships and tactics with strategy, according to the author. Most of all, he says, we need a bigger theory of the game.

Three Career Questions really shines when the author presents his "orbital mechanics" approach to career management. Avoid preparing a heroic, one-time rocket launch designed to crash-land on Planet Job (and sometimes requiring the Parachute!), he says. Instead, select a distant object in the career solar system and navigate steadily toward it, borrowing energy from planets (organizations) along the way and using the "gravity slingshot" effect to propel you forward.

Navigation, says the author, is accomplished by continuously asking and answering the Three Career Questions -- the threads that tie the methodology together.

Three Career Questions is somewhat repetitive and the writing wordy in places. But it's a terrific, post-Parachute guide to the new laws of physics in a turbulent career universe.

Clients say it's a winner!

I have recommended this book to several clients now and have gotten great feedback regarding it. While I thought it was terrific as a way the think strategically about a career path, the real "proof of the pudding" is whether people who are in the midst of making career decisions find it useful. The three clients who were or are using it, have all said they found it provocative and made them think more deeply about their next steps. Oh, and it's a fun read as well. How much better could it get?

Finally--The Career Book that Needed to be Written, and Needs to be Read

This is my new favorite career book and is already being woven into my career advising sessions with students and alumni of the liberal arts college whose career center I direct. Besides being for the career advisor who wants to up his or her game with clients at all levels of career sophistication, this book is one I'll strongly recommended for college students really ready to get their career off on the right foot. And it's a must-read for graduates in the workforce a few years, experiencing their first bout of Where am I going? What am I doing? What else is out here for me? I've sent several copies out to alumni clients because I'm so excited about this book and want to jumpstart our conversations after the holidays.

Paraphrasing some of the author's many suggestions: Summarize the work value you deliver in 8 words. Get out of your head and productively conversant with key people in your circle and beyond. Pay attention to these 10 pathways to professional development that you may be overlooking. Do a personal SWOT analysis that takes 5 minutes and is immediately actionable. Address your weaknesses by developing a related strength using a very simple, straightforward tactic...all great.

Decent books on how to find a job abound, but what I love about about this one is that it takes the conversation to the higher level of strategy and is as relevant for the long-employed as it is for the first-job seeker. I found myself nodding in agreement over and over as the author validated some of my own thinking, but more often than not took my strategies for effective career advising to the next level.

The book's conversational and enjoyable, intuitive and memorable--and its advice, logic, and simplicity is utterly irresistible. Just the right balance of reference to theory, case scenarios, and most importantly, concrete advice for addressing the three questions, gives the reader a guidebook that can be used over and over to keep a step ahead of the tornado of career indecision and on the road to an optimized, satisfying career. Especially if you lack a top-notch career mentor or advisor, or a workplace environment that really nurtures career development, even a few chapters of this book are well worth the investment.

The fact that it is so thorough and relevant for even the most seasoned professional makes it clear that this book is the culmination of years of practice refining and validating its ideas in the field rather than an untested set of suggestions that just sound good. I'll look forward to the sequel. (Surely there are more than 3 questions!)

About the Author
Raymond Chang received his B.Sc. degree in chemistry from London University, England and his Ph.D. in Chemistry from Yale University. �After doing postdoctoral research at Washington University and teaching for a year at Hunter College, he joined the chemistry at Williams College, where he has taught since 1968. �Professor Chang has written books on spectroscopy, physical chemistry, and industrial chemistry.

Rented this for my upcoming college semester. Was expecting a lower quality book, but it came hardcover with almost no folded or crumpled pages!
