Great collection of methods and designs!

This a very nice collection of patterns. The book has a lot of how-to advice that I benifited from even though I'm fairly experienced in intarsia. My only wish is the patterns be printed to scale even if it took dividing them up into 4-5 pages but some are so big I suppose it would be reasonably more expensive to publish. (My printer/copier dosen't let me scale them like my old one would.)
I've never seen a better intarsia book!

Kathy Wise is the very best of the commercial Intarsia Artists and this book is an excellent example of her artwork. If you love sculpting wood and the use of exotic woods she gives you the best of her inventory in patterns and creations in her newest book.

Some Undiscovered Poems

I discovered a number of wonderful poems that I was not familiar with, as well as some old favorites. It even had my favorite, The Cremation of Sam McGee. However, it doesn't have the number of favorites that "Best Loved Poems of the American People" has. Another poetry anthology that I like is "Poetry for a Lifetime" which actually had most of my favorites, and was also illustrated and included comments by the editor for each poem.

Best poetry collection ever

I had this book back in the late 70s...lost it through the years...it has poems in it I have loved and remembered and a couple of weeks ago I was running up a particular poem online, UNAWARES by Emma A. Lent, and lo and behold...THIS book came up...I was moved to tears to find it again because I had loved it so much..! I ordered it right away...I am so thankful to have it in my possession once again. I am a collector in what interests me. I have been collecting poems since I was 9 years old...I am now 56.

The Fundamentals of Ethics - An Instructor's Impressions

I'm a graduate student/teaching fellow, and use this book with my introductory ethics students in addition to several primary sources. In my experience it does a good job introducing students to various approaches to ethics. Dr. Shafer-Landau does a very nice job of presenting strong cases + criticisms for positions without ever seeming biased. This book does what most introductory texts seem incapable of: forcing students to stop fence-sitting and choose an approach they find most convincing. I particularly liked the chapters on ethical pluralism, since my students often want to pick several parts of different theories and put them together.

Some things this book does not do:

1) "Fundamentals" is not a book in applied ethics. Some ethical hot topics come up in different chapters such as Kant's positions on animal rights + criminal justice, but Dr. Shafer-Landau usually focuses on specific hypothetical examples. If you are looking for a book on these kind of topics, this isn't for you. (In my experience most of my students would rather discuss a specific case rather than a general ethical issue, so I don't consider this a liability, but do be warned.)
2) This is a topical introduction, not a historical one. That means you'll get a discussion on virtue ethics, but not necessarily an overview of Aristotle's (or Plato's, or MacIntyre's) virtue ethics. The one exception here is Kant; the introduction to his deontological thought is well-done and a real boon to my students. But even there, the parallels to specific discussions in Kant aren't clear. This works well as a stand-alone text to set the stage for primary sources, or as a brief introduction to ethics as a single unit in a general "Philosophy 101" course; but don't expect detailed exegeses of Kant, Mill, and Aristotle. (It's only 300-odd pages, after all!)
3) The organization of the book was not what I expected. Not a huge deal; the chapters can be read more or less out of order, so long as you keep the topic-pairs together. While it does a good job investigating questions of cultural relativism + religion vs. ethics, this is done at the end of the book. Usually, these are the questions I want to start with. The prolonged discussion of hedonism and preference-fulfillment was also organized a bit awkwardly and might have worked better if it was more integrated in with the other chapters on specific approaches to ethics.

I have quibbles on certain sections. Most notably, I think Kant has a better answer to the question of animal cruelty than Shafer-Landau gives him credit for. Even so, those quibbles are fewer and further between than with any other intro texts I've seen. This book works well, particularly in conjunction with primary sources to give students a "case study" on how each of these approaches can work in practice. (I use Political Philosophy: The Essential Texts or Moral Philosophy: A Reader, depending on how political I want to get that term.)

This book is great reading. It is a love story in the truest sense. It may have been written in the mid-80's but it is not out of date in showing true love and a person not giving up her high morals for physical affection. I would reccommend this book to anyone struggling with her religion and love of another. This book is a great love story.

Sweet and thoughtful

this was a sweet love story published back in 1984. it is about a christian woman
named Janet Montgomery who is working as a secretary for Mr Reese Edwards.
Jant has seen her boss go through many,many "air head blondes"--using them and
then tossing them out so,not only has Janet formed an aversion to these blondes,she
does not have too good a feeling towards her boss. Janet struggles within herself to
understand why he does this,but inexplicably,Janet finds herself attracted to Reese.
slowly through the book,Reese and Janet do become closer-sharing many things but,
Janet will not give her body. Janet has morals and was raised with religion. so,what will
happen to this couple ???
this author has a nice,fluid writing style. i found myself really liking and siding with Janet.
Reese was playing games with Janet and continuing (or seeming to) his "flirtation" with
other blonde females WHILE he was forming his deeper friendship with Janet. i got
angry with Reese. who does he think he is,God's gift ???? ARRGGG !
please read this one. it was very thoughtful writing.
