Excellent for the Vintage Hairstyler...

My own skills w/ vintage and retro hairstyling are developing so a book like this was a must. Though there are many books that accomplish the look of the 1940's elaborate hairstyles using modern tools, I wanted the real McCoy...a book that wouldnt help me cheat my way to classic looks. This one has excellent and simple diagrams for both the styles and the haircuts of the era. Pincurl diagrams for Victory Rolls and 'fluff' bangs (think Trudy Cockenlocker) are detailed and easy to follow. My only problem w/ the book is the lack of 'fingerwaving' instructions. But it is well worth the cost, regardless. I also love the 'clip out' illustrations to hang in the 'window of your beauty salon'. I hung them in my closet for inspiration!

If you want to do the hairstyles, the basics matter

I've always been a fan of vintage style, but every time I'd attempt to try one of the gorgeous hairstyles of Bette Davis, Joan Crawford, Rita Hayworth or Betty Grable, it just wouldn't last. Well, now I'm getting the sense of why that was - it's all about the preparation.
Setting and prepping hair is the essence to creating a classic hairstyle. Also, you need to have a proper haircut and this book illustrates three versions of the Middy (core to most 40s hairstyles), the Baby and the Long. There are plenty of pin curl diagrams and framing references to let you know how your hairdo should be shaped to be properly aligned to frame your face.
I'm a newbie and this book is helping me learn step by step. If you want to start learning the basics of 40s hair, get your setting lotion, curl clips, sponge rollers and hairspray ready and buy this book. Bramcost is an excellent publisher of vintage style guides and a quick shipper. You won't be disappointed and if you read this book carefully, you will learn even if you are not a professional.

Pretty good.

This book definately has some good tips, but the hair CUTs definately wouldn't work 24/7, and therefore a few of the tips don't really apply. I think more tips on the actual hair layout would definately help, as would tips for doing it to yourself, although of course that isn't always easy or practical. I would definately recomend this book, but it would probably be even better if used as a supplement to another hairstyling book.
