Mel Bay was born on February 25, 1913 in the little Ozark Mountain town of Bunker, Missouri. He bought a Sears Roebuck guitar at the age of 13 and several months later played his first gig. (He recalled playing until his fingers were raw!) Mel took up the tenor banjo shortly thereafter and continued to play both instruments. During his teenage years Mel played with a wild assortement of bands and characters in rural Missouri. Perhaps no gig was as strange as the job he landed with, in Mel's words, a snake oil salesman. This flamboyant peddler would pull his ostentatious Pierce Arrow automobile, complete with steer horns mounted on the grill, into the center of a small, rural town. Mel would sit on the car and play up a storm on the tenor banjo. After a crowd gathered, the peddler took over and began extolling the merits of his wonder elixer. In 1933 Mel Bay moved to St. Louis and began his professional career. He played with numerous local and traveling bands. In addition, he landed staff guitar jobs on several radio stations. Mel fronted his own trio (piano, bass, guitar) and played steadily for 25 years! He was equally adept on most fretted instruments and played mandolin, uke, Hawaiian guitar, tenor and plectrum banjo professionally. While Mel was actively pursuing his playing career, he continued to teach as many as 100 students a week. He decided to begin writing instructional materials due to the difficulty encountered by guitarists at playing good sounding chord forms in rhythm sections and due to the poor note reading ability prevalent among guitarists. After the war Mel was asked to write instructional materials on guitar for GI's wanting to learn music under the GI Bill. In 1947 Mel formed his own publishing company and wrote his landmark initial book titled The Orchestral Chord System for Guitar. (This book is still in print under the title Rhythm Guitar Chord System and continues to be one the finest rhythm guitar chord texts available!) His Modern Guitar Method was penned shortly thereafter. For years Mel traveled from town to town talking to guitar teachers and players and showing them his publications. At one time Mel claims to have known virtually every guitar teacher in America on a first name basis! The guitar and Mel Bay books caught on in a big way in the 1950's. Things have continued to grow ever since. Mel used to sell D'Angelico guitars. At any given time he would have 5 or 6 lying around the house. Mel played professionally on his New Yorker model but his favorite was the initial Mel Bay Model crafted as a gift for him by John D'Angelico. This famous guitar had all of the main features of the New Yorker but was a cut away model and had a slightly thinner neck. This instrument has been pictured on the Mel Bay Modern Guitar Method for decades. Someone once calculated that sales of guitar books written by Mel Bay have exceeded 25 million copies. When asked, Mel frequently said that he quit counting long ago. Sales of his Modern Guitar Method have alone surpassed the 7 million mark. It is safe to say that Mel Bay is one of the pivotal figures in the world of guitar music and instruction in this century. Joseph Castle (1913-1992) was born in Bloomington, Illinois. His childhood was spent on a fruit farm near Mackinaw, Illinois. When he was twelve, Joseph was discovered by Russel Harvey, a teacher at Illinois Wesleyan University with whom he studied violin. There were very few guitar teachers at the time Mr. Castle became interested in the guitar, so he was primarily self-taught on that instrument, using the Carcassi text. His interest in both plectrum and fingerstyle guitar started in high school. Not the complete method!

This edition is not really what it says. Carcassi's original method was published as Opus 59. There are three parts - the first takes you through the major keys C, G, D, A, E, F and minor keys Am, Em, Dm. The second part starts with slurs and trills, introduces higher positions, and rounds out some of the other keys. Part III, ***which is missing*** are 50 graded etudes. These are NOT the 25 Etudes of Opus 60. The omitted etudes of Opus 59 are very charming and do a lot to prepare you for Opus 60. The Carl Fischer edition (the orange one) has the 50 etudes.

The best classic guitar method ever

The old saying is that copying is the best form of flattery. The original etudes and solos written by Carcassi have been included in almost every classic and acoustic method book "written" in the last 50 years, quite often without proper reference to Carcassi as the author. I do not believe that any single method is complete enough to provide all that is needed however, the quality of the excercises and original songs in this method surpasses what one will find in most (the method published by Carulli is as good as this book) other method books. Mel Bay's imprint of the Carcassi method is densly packed with songs and wonderful etudes and scales (all solos), not words and wasteful pictures. The organization of this version is altered (for the better) from the original. (see the Carl Fischer version for the original organization) It is organized by key and concentrates on mastering the first and second positions before introducing more advanced techniques and the higher positions. My only complaint is that the pace of instruction increases too quickly (and the number of practice pieces drops off) once Carcassi begins to introduce the higher positions. I think learning the higher positions is easier to master one string at a time (see Parkening's method ) instead of by positions.

Included in the book are the 25 studies publishe by Carcassi. These are often sold on their own for about the same cost as this book. The book is spiral bound and is printed with great clarity on parchment tinted paper that is very easy on the eyes. There is just enough fingering, helpful but not overdone. The text is written in english and spanish. For the quality of the printing, the lay flat spiral binding and the shear volume of original guitar music, this is the best bargain around. Get it.

The Best You Cn Buy

I've played the guitar for 25 years or so, various styles including heavy metal, bluegrass, praise music, gospel, country, & classical. I have spent probably 1/3 of that time teaching. Needless to say, over that period of time I have seen quite a few guitar books. I have used various books to teach both students & myself. I have said all of that so I can say this: The Carcassi method book is the best guitar method book I have used. I have never seen the guitar explained in such a manner & fashion that leaves one wanting to learn more, it is pure genius. One key element of this book, I believe, is the fact that the studies & etudes were written for the guitar. You're not taking music originally written for the lute, cello, viloin, or piano & crossing over to the guitar. These studies & methods have stood the test of time. In short, this is the best guitar method book I have ever seen; & I have seen them all.

The best brewing book I have read yet

This book is fantastically well researched, and extremely informative in an area of brewing that is short on really quality literature. "Wild Brews" and "Farmhouse Ales" are both very quality books for traditional methods and the history of old world "wild" beers, but if you are interested in brewing or consuming experimental American sour beers, this book is absolutely essential.

The author has an exceptional blog he has maintained for many years titled "The Mad Fermentationist". I have read nearly every article on the blog, and it got me started brewing sour beers in my own home. I have brewed over a dozen sour beers now, and felt like I mostly knew what I was doing. This book goes FAR beyond the content on his blog, and expanded my knowledge far beyond what I expected.

The in-depth information into the methods of elite sour breweries and award winning homebrewers allows you to not only attempt to replicate their methods, but also gives you enough information to create your own methods from their advice. While incredibly well researched and dense with information, the book is extremely accessible due to the excellent writing style of the author.

Overall I can't recommend it enough. If you brew sour beer, or want to brew sour beer, you absolutely must own a copy of this book.

Packed with essential brewing know-how

This book will serve as a valuable and enduring resource for adventurous brewers at all levels of expertise. It is well documented yet clear and comprehendible throughout. The author starts with a primer on sour beers then takes the reader step by step through various options at each stage of sour beer production. He explains the different mindset necessary to brew sours and guides the reader through the creative journey with numerous concrete examples and advice from successful brewers. The book wraps up with an array of proven recipes as well as suggestions for further experimentation.

On another note, the author writes an impressive blog at [...] and offers in the introduction of this book to answer specific questions from worried brewers that contact him through his blog.

Wonderful book!

What a wonderful book! Sour beers have been traditionally classed as a Flanders Ale (Red or Brown), some variant of Lambic or as a Berliner Weisse. There are alternatives and that's what this book is all about. This is a recently published book and I see new styles of sour ales are finding their way into the BJCP guidelines. This is an exciting time for homebrewers.

This book is probably the most comprehensive text on sour beers for the home brewer - it's full of useful information. The author has a website (search for the 'Mad Fermentationist') and obviously has a lot of experience on this topic.

Be warned, this is not a book for the beginner. Brewing sour beers is a long complicated process and the results are not assured. The reader must be at least familiar with all grain brewing techniques in order to get most out of the book.

Those of you who have already acquired a taste for sour beers will know that commercial examples are not at cheap and often will cost 10 to 30 dollars for a single bottle. Making them yourself costs no more than for other beers - you just have to wait a few years before they are ready. So start the production line now - this book will help you.

Those of you who haven't acquired a taste, go out and buy some and see what you're missing - then buy this book.

Highly recommended!

I love the grunge bands, especially Alice in Chains, and bought this with birthday money for Amazon. From the first words I was engrossed. The author constructs an impressively complex portrait of a fairly enigmatic band. From the beginning you know where the story is going (if you're familiar with Alice) and as it progresses it becomes more and more heartbreaking as the details surrounding Layne and Mike Starr's addiction unfolds. I would highly recommend this book not just for fans of the band, but for those seeking to understand addiction in general.

If there's some minor quibbles, it's these 2 points. One is I would've liked to have learned more about Jerry Cantrell, who undoubtedly was an important creative force behind the music. Granted, this is an unauthorized account, and Cantrell didn't offer his blessing with access. There is some information about him, but nothing compared to the attention given to Layne. Another source of irritation was how sometimes the author didn't clarify who some of the minor players associated with the band were. Lots of people are referenced with few sticking details provided to distinguish them throughout the book. But these are minor gripes.

I loved this book. Get it if you're even the least bit interested in AIC. The journey is as difficult and uncomfortable as some of their best music.A fitting tribute to a legendary band.

I've been listening to AIC since I picked up a copy of Facelift on cassette way back in the early 90's. I was hooked immediately and have been ever since. Unfortunately, because of this I witnessed the rise and fall of this epic band. The really weird part is that through the years nothing has really ever been openly documented in one well compiled, deeply detailed, and verified account of what really happened behind the scenes. This book did just that and did it well. I feel like I actually have a much clearer picture of what could be called the rise and fall of the first iteration of this band. The dismissal of Mike Starr, the integration of Mike Inez, Layne's drug use and how it affected the band in so many ways. This book also proved to be one of the most depressing books I've ever read regarding the tragic loss of such great talent to an out of control drug addiction. The death of Andrew Wood, the loss of Demri Parrott, Layne's spiral into the abyss, and finally Mike Starr's tragic end. Even if you aren't an Alice in Chains fan, this book really does give you a great insight into the Seattle music scene during the late 80's and early 90's. Well worth the read.

Great Book for Alice Fans

This is a great book for any fan of Alice In Chains looking to understand more about the band. The primary focus of the book is on the late frontman Layne Staley. The book describes the good and bad times Layne and the rest of the members went through, even before the formation of the band. As a huge Layne Staley and Alice In Chains fan, I was suprised at how much I didn't know prior to reading this. The material in this book is well researched and backed by interviews with people close to the band. The book is awesome and captivating to say the least.

A wealth of information

This book is an invaluable aid for anyone looking to improve their fitness using cross training. It does exactly 'what it says on the tin', providing you with a multitude of daily workouts.

All in all, a great compilation. There are enough WOD's in this great little book to add variety to you workout routine for years to come.

This record is my gemstone collection and thanks to Morgan, who provide me this as a newfangled direction of life. Actually, I had in frustration cause of my physical weakness (Fat) and others. Finally, this book gave me direction to avoid blame life. After reading, I just realized myself as a strong man having right tips and tricks Of body exercise. There have lots of techniques that are suitable for all ages people and I like to be exposed the Day with these cross training! Highly recommend to my friends!

Well laid out and formatted in Kindle. Easy to read and follow along. This has some of the best workouts i have come across. Really kick my butt.

Anyone into cross training needs to get this book. I highly recommend it. For experienced people you will catch on quick. For beginners this book takes the time in the beginning to teach basic terms. So either way this book is for you. I like the name too, lol.

Bruce E. Blaine (PhD, SUNY at Buffalo) is Professor of Psychology and Director of the Statistics Program at St. John Fisher College in Rochester, NY. He is widely published in social and health psychology. His other research interests include obesity treatment effectiveness and meta-analytic research methods.

... which is a course I elected to take to satisfy a college level general education requirement

This book was assigned for my psychology of diversity class which is a course I elected to take to satisfy a college level general education requirement. I felt that the studies referenced seemed to be biased, and some seemed downright bogus. Just to clarify - I did not do further research on the studies I doubted, I just read the book and took the class.

An example of something that I thought was bogus though was in the section on prejudice against obese individuals. The author defended obese/overweight people and said that some people are unable to lose weight after a certain point, or lose any weight at all. The author also gave a figure between 30-50% (sorry, I can't remember exactly but I know it was pretty high) for the number of diets that do not work because after the diet people tend to gain the weight right back. I though that it was common knowledge that in order to lose weight it takes a lifestyle change; diet and exercise should not be temporary if you want permanent results. The author seemed to feel otherwise.

good introductory text

although those two other reviewers scream about the dated references, he also uses a lot of updated references to support his thoughts. as a person of color, i did feel like the book was geared more towards a white audience and because i know the literature i know he makes some obscure and incomplete references, but the general points and conclusions are spot on in terms of where the literature currently stands. not sure why these other reviewers are so biased.
