A Sceptics Review

We sceptics are an intelligent bunch. Go to any Sceptics conference and you will see and meet a large number of people that have a range of experience, qualifications and skills. It is impossible to keep up with everyone. But now you can ! Well, you can try.

Hazel Muir has written an interesting little book of over 400 pages that deal with all the "key concepts" of science. Collated into the basic areas of physics, chemistry, biology and 9 other areas, the book provides a useful background to all the great things in science.

Written in a clear and concise manner, it is not the type of book that can pass for a text book or other academic publication, but it can provide that primer for such debates on climate science and sustainability. My concern is the explanation of concepts cannot be done in two pages. For example, Muir attempts to explain the electromagnetic spectrum in two pages, the explanation is clear, but does not do the actual subject justice. But the subject of photosynthesis with the simple diagram does. This is one of the disadvantages of the book, not be used as a standalone authority on concepts on science, but it does provide a start. Muir writes all explanations in a maximum of 200 words, a big ask for some of the concepts that are put forward. No doubt something could be missed in the reading.

But then, this book would be a great little gift for that young sceptic in your life that loves science, or as an introduction to the field of science. The style is very journalistic, which is not surprising when Muir is a former staffer on the magazine New Scientist. An astrophysicist by trade, her academic credibility is high, hence I see her bringing science to people that normally would not read a science textbook. Something all good sceptics would appreciate.

So, I do recommend this book to readers, something that can be read on the train or late at night, just don't tell your sceptic mates !

ANYONE can read and understand this. You will learn, no doubt about it.

Whether you're only semi-interested in science or you're a born physicist looking for a great refresher, this book is a fantastic addition to your life.

Great Gift

Bought three of these (this, the Math, and the Ideas books) as gifts and they were all very much loved. Great coffee table book for quick reference on subjects you may be interested in but have little knowledge with. The summaries are very easy to read and even knowing a lot of the subjects myself there's a lot to learn. Highly recommend for anyone who likes science, even if you've never studied it before.

Conspiracy, kidnapping, murder, lies, deceit, betrayal, secrets held and secrets revealed.

Darren’s journey of discovery and adventure continues in The Enlightened by Dima Zales. Darren is plunged into another hidden world of the Mind Dimension people. This time it is a mysterious group who has been looking for him to use in their plans to attain another level of Enlightenment. Or is this a seemingly nefarious plan to grab more power? What they want to do with that power is left unsaid.

At the end of the previous book in this series, The Thought Pushers, there are two major mysteries still unsolved, who was helping Jacob, and who is Darren really?

Who is the Pusher that was Jacob’s ally, (or manipulator), in the plot to kill these people? And why does he want to kill them? Who are the people on the hit list? Why did he kill Mira and Eugene’s parents?

The second mystery is who is Darren really? Who were his biological parents, and why were they murdered, and who killed them? How much do his two moms, Lucy and Sara, really know about this, and what secrets have they been keeping from him? Or do they even know the answers?

This part of the story goes a long way in answering those questions, while raising others. (Of course, there’s another book.) This story continues on many levels. There are many surprises when we find out which characters are related to each other, and who has crossed paths to create the current situations that our team of adventurers has to navigate.

And yet again, Darren discovers that he has powers and abilities that he never imagined.

This book is another well-crafted urban fantasy adventure by Dima Zales. Darren has grown as a character. He starts out in Book 1, The Thought Readers, as something of a twenty-something dilatant, not a bad guy, but not very serious either, with no real direction to his life. He’s now developed as a mature young adult, ready to handle the surprising twists and challenges that are thrown his way by chance and the plotting of others. The other characters in the story have become real people that you care about. From Mira and Eugene, to Lucy, Burt, Thomas, Hillary, and a group of supporting cast to make the story real, their personalities and actions add to the suspense.

This book has lots of action, great character development, mysteries solved and mysteries revealed. I recommend it wholeheartedly.

Non-Stop Excitement

I love when I reach Book 3 of any series! This is the point in the series where you pretty much know all of the main characters and the author is able to really focus on the story. And The Enlightened is no exception to that rule. This book takes off running with all kinds of exciting changes happening to our favorite characters. Very quickly into the story, Darren is whisked off to all kinds of interesting new things. I don't want to give spoilers, so let me just tell you that we get lots of answers about his past and the world of the Readers. If you enjoyed the action in Book 2, then you won't be disappointed with Book 3. Although the conflicts in the early portion of the book tend to be more intellectually based, if you stick with it, there will be plenty of fight scenes and excitement. In fact, the story in this book was so terrific that I was fully expecting to be writing a 5 star review. Really! I'm kind of stingy with the 5 star reviews, but this book is really terrific. Except...

Hang on one moment while I get my soapbox. Forgive me, but I absolutely can not complete this review without saying this. PLEASE, I'm begging you. This is to ALL of the authors out there. Please, save your political agendas for somewhere else. I am reading stories like this in order to be entertained. I am exhausted with everything on television, in movies, and lately even in books cramming some political opinion down my throat. I am absolutely disgusted with reading about villains whose sole reason for being evil is because they are a right-wing, pro-life, pro-traditional marriage white man. And for all of the conservative authors out there, let me say that I am just as fed up with villains who go on crazed shooting sprees because they play Call of Duty or listen to rap music. Enough already. I can't say this enough... please, for the love of all that is good in the world, stop creating these ridiculously shallow bad guys with absolutely zero believable motive for their actions.

Okay... soap box is stowed safely in the closet again. Outside of that single complaint, I can't say enough good things about this book. I'm excited to read Book 4. Based on the summary, it sounds like there are a lot of new things that Darren will be getting involved with and I'm looking forward to seeing what they are.

another thrilling story

I received this item for free in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own. I think Mind Dimensions has become one of my new favorite series, and The Enlightened did not disappoint me in the least. Many things which happened in this book I felt Zales had hinted at previously. Normally I hate it when writing is predictable but while some things did not take me by surprise, Zales does such a wonderful job of writing that the predictability didn't bother me. I thoroughly enjoyed this story and it kept me on the edge of my seat at all times. There were plenty of twists and surprises to keep me interested and I'm looking forward to seeing how this series will progress.

Kinshuk is Associate Dean of Faculty of Science and Technology and Full Professor in the School of Computing and Information Systems at Athabasca University, Canada. He also holds the NSERC/CNRL/Xerox/McGraw Hill Industrial Research Chair for Adaptivity and Personalization in Informatics. He is founding chair of IEEE Technical Committee on Learning Technologies, and founding editor of the Journal of Educational Technology and Society and the Smart Learning Environments journal.
