A gripping history of an important award
By Robert F. Dorr
The best way to understand the Purple Heart is to learn the stories of a variety of Americans who received this award -- usually, but not always, for being wounded in battle. The author of "For Military Merit" is a recognized expert on awards and decorations. More importantly, he has interviewed and researched the stories of Americans who were decorated. The many dozens of Purple Heart recipients covered in this book include some who also received higher awards, like Medal of Honor holder Audie Murphy; some who served in war but became better known in other fields, like actor James Garner; and some who received the award for unusual reasons, like Pacific air war leader George C. Kenney.

Borch tells us the origins of the Purple Heart -- with both George Washington and Douglas MacArthur having pivotal roles. But the real value of this book is in its many dozens of human stories of Americans who were recognized for their service and sacrifice. This book is a good read for the history buff and is suitable for all ages. The World War II history cited below would have been better if only this reference source had been available earlier.

If you've used any other Cengel's thermo textbook, you'll be entirely familiar with the formatting of this one down to the pictures at the edges of most of the pages to explain some of the more important concepts. Amazon.com Review
Imagine having 61 widely published photographers from around the world candidly discuss their careers and beliefs while showing you key images from their portfolios. That is the engaging concept of Magnum Stories. From Iran-born Abbas (whose career began with a series about the Vietcong in the 1970s) to Patrick Zachmann (who has documented the lives of Malian immigrants in his native France), each photographer is given ample space to talk about his or her work. Editor Chris Boot accompanies the interviews with a brief explanation of the cultural or political background of each suite of images. The one thing the interviewees have in common is past or current membership in Magnum, a photographers' cooperative founded in 1947 by Robert Capa, Henri Cartier-Bresson and David Seymour as a means of breaking free from the editorial tyranny of Life and other photo-based magazines. Boot's introduction deftly summarizes Magnum's history and the practicalities of postwar photography. The presence of vintage "Magnum stories" by such photographers as Erich Hartmann ("Our Daily Bread") and W. Eugene Smith ("Country Doctor") adds a welcome historical dimension. While the founding generation were mostly photo-journalists who organized their images into visual "stories," today's members often pursue topics of personal interest with photographs that do not relate a straightforward narrative. These topics range from outlaw biker gangs in the U.S. (Dennis Stock) to the mountain peoples of Laos, Guatemala and Georgia (John Vink), from the tacky seaside resort of New Brighton in Liverpool, England (Martin Parr) to Siberian prison camps (Carl De Keyzer). With nearly 800 illustrations, this distinctive, square-format book offers a kaleidoscopic survey of the many faces of documentary photography. —-Cathy Curtis

Review
'Marvellous ... how some of the world's best pictures were taken, edited and laid out in order to make the perfect statement.' (The Sunday Times) 'Gives us an inside-out look at how history is recorded. More than 60 photographers tell firsthand about shooting a favourite story, in their own words, and illustrated with famous images as well as some never-before-seen.' (Black & White Magazine) 'The kaleidoscope of world events and prominent figures found within these pages is astounding ... The value of this book can be fully fathomed when one realizes that much of the general population experiences history through photographs, which in turn shapes human memory.' (Library Journal) 'The length of the stories and the essays gives them an uncommonly personal feel and lends humanity to a body of work normally encountered as anonymous, dislocated images. Figuratively and literally a heavyweight title.' (Arena) 'Embracing gritty realism, glamour, intimacy and humour.' (Esquire) 'Scorching, poignant, devastating, serene, playful, Magnum's powerful images always leave an imprint on the mind ... the perfect manual to realise the dynamics and success of this intriguing organisation. If any of their publications represents their ideals and idiosyncrasy, this is it. Like the agency itself, this book is unique. Not only beautiful, these photographs also convey the depth and intelligence with which each photographer has treated his chosen subject. Page after page of extraordinary images ... A feast of stunning iconic images ... The vision, dedication and defiance on these pages are the latest example of Magnum doing things their own way. As the late Henri Cartier-Bresson urged his fellow members: "Vive la revolution permanente!" It seems they are listening still.' (Elaine Livingstone, picture editor, Sunday Herald) 'Gives the reader some fascinating insights into [the photographers'] work ... with so many interesting stories to tell, Magnum Stories runs to over 500 pages. GBP40 [sic] seems a small price to pay for an extraordinary book.' (British Journal of Photography) 'Marvellous ... how some of the world's best pictures were taken, edited and laid out in order to make the perfect statement.' (Sunday Times) 'Lavish, well-illustrated, and important.' (Daily Telegraph) 'Glorious ... celebration of the photo essay. ... stunning, astounding, and beautifully produced.' (Blueprint) 'Such is the pre-eminence of Magnum Photos, that this history of the agency almost serves as a history of photojournalism for the second half of the 20th century.' (RPS (Royal Photographic Society) Journal) 'Impressive, instructive and profound ... an invaluable tool which should be on every picture researcher's shelf.' (Montage, the magazine of the Picture Research Association) 'This mighty tome demands to be taken seriously. Magnum are the originals, the auteurs, the most committed of the photojournalists, and they demand respect. ... [a] masterwork.' (foto8 (photojournalism magazine)) 'Magnum Stories is a superb compendium of international photojournalism, from war zones and refugee camps to urban street corners and hospital wards.' (The Sacramento Bee) 'In a society bombarded with imagery, this book is a timely reminder of the power of documentary still photography.' (Maclean's) 'A marvelous new photo collection is Magnum Stories, which profiles photographers from the legendary agency founded by Henri Cartier-Bresson and Robert Capa.' (Business Week) 'It is the season for books that cause back strain. This year's 10 lb. plus coffee-table tomes include Magnum Stories, a visual history of the Magnum photography agency...The book combines essays and photos of 61 photographers from the past six decades.' (The Wall Street Journal) 'There's a great story here-actually 61 stories. Boot has structured a book that is fresh, inviting, and provocative.' (Christian Science Monitor) 'Phaidon Press has just released Magnum Stories a breathtaking collection of work by 61 active, retired and deceased Magnum photographers. The 510-page book explores brilliant photographic storytelling, from Eugene Richards' crack cocaine photos to Philip Jones Griffiths' coverage of the 1983 U.S. invasion of Grenada. Along with the photo essays are moving personal statements by each photographer.' (Newark Star Ledger)

About the Author
Boot is an independent writer, curator and editor on subjects relating to photography. In 1990 he joined Magnum Photos where he worked for eight years, becoming director of Magnum London in 1993 and subsequently Director of Magnum New York in 1996.

Stories -- get to know them better
By Tom
This book is not your usual photo book -- it's real value and what makes it different is the stories inside. Inside, 61 Magnum photographers have written 2-page story about themselves, about why they take pictures, how they work etc. As the book also features photos and/or photo story from each photographer, they also share "inside" information about presented pictures and their background.

I truly recommend this book to all people who have serious interest in documentary photography and like reading/seeing interviews with photographers. If you just want to see pictures and not interested in personalities, then perhaps you should take a look at Magnum Degrees or other similar books.

Brilliant Anthology Of Decisive Moments
By Thomas Edwards
This is a brilliant anthology of the "decisive moments" of the collective individuals who made up the legendary photo agency, Magnum.

Magnum Stories allows one to peer into the mind's eye of the most influential photojournalists of the 20th Century; part history book (as Rodger would have intended), part art book (as HCB would have intended), part photographic teaching book (as Capa would have intended), part autobiography(ies) book, and all at a price that Chim would have appreciated.

One is encouraged to read (simultaneously, if possible) Russell Miller's "Magnum - Fifty Years At The Front Line Of History" to complete the "Big Picture" of the individual Decisive Moments to fully understand the impact of the brilliant artifice constructed by Capa, Chim, HCB and Rodger in that noteworthy spring of 1947.

That said, one would have wished that the other significant actors in the House of Magnum, such as Ernest Haas, Sebastiao Salgado and Mary-Ellen Mark, would have been included in Magnum Stories. Otherwise - Bravo! Bravo! Bravo!

From Publishers Weekly
Gray Wolf, bereft of his mate, hunts alone in the snow-bright night, unknowingly infringing on another pack's territory. "His eyes burn like steady flames. The leader of the pack stares back. Their eyes lock. The moon burns a hole in the night." Returning to the ambience of The Owl Who Became the Moon (Children's Forecasts, Dec. 28, 1992), London recreates this single moment--frozen in time, saturated with tension and possibility. And the power of this moment generates a story. Words pour out, as fierce as the arctic cold or as luminous as the yellow moon (a wolf "floats over the snow . . . flowing like water"), evoking genuine feeling without humanizing animals, and portraying nature without being teacherly. In his full-spread watercolors, Van Zyle--an Iditarod racer who keeps a team of Siberian huskies (close descendants of the wolf)--depicts the arctic night and its wolves with uncommon intimacy and ease. Ages 3-8.

From School Library Journal
Kindergarten-Grade 3-In poetic prose as spare as the Northern setting it portrays, a crucial moment in the life of a wolf who has lost his mate to man is described. Gray Wolf hunts on a moonlit winter night until suddenly his senses alert him to the presence of a strange pack. White Wolf steps out, the two animals meet, circling each other, leaving together, and eventually become the leaders of a new pack. The strength of this story is in its art. The moon is a powerful presence, washing over the snow, lighting the wolves' eyes with intensity, highlighting their bristling fur, offering shadows of the pack that never steps into its light. Van Zyle's brushstrokes are rich with texture, drawing readers into the environment and the story. A map showing the animal's past and present ranges, an extensive list of conservation organizations, and an excellent author's note that briefly discusses history, behavior, and endangered status contribute to the authority of the book. Superior art and minimalist text offer a more accessible and gripping glimpse of the wolf than that found in Jim Murphy's The Call of the Wolves (Scholastic, 1989).

From Booklist
Ages 5-10. On a cold, northern night, the "wild, untamed music" of Gray Wolf's howling can be heard bouncing off the moon. Having recently "lost his mate to a man's steel trap," Gray Wolf is alone and restless as he hunts his snow-covered territory. But when he encounters a wolf pack, a young white wolf steps forth to go with him and be his mate, and he is alone no more. Beginning with the dramatic close-up Gray Wolf looking outward from the dust jacket, noted wildlife artist Van Zyle lures the reader into the wolf's moonlit world in a series of double-page paintings. An effective counterpoint to these powerful images, London's narration is spare and crisply poetic. Together, the two have created a potent vision of a winter interlude as seen through the eyes of Gray Wolf. Imbued with an obvious passion for this majestic endangered animal, the book concludes with a list of organizations working to preserve the wolf and a note from the author appealing for the reader's concern and efforts on behalf of the wolf. Different kind of kid's book.
By Mark Savary
This is one of those children's picture books that doesn't quite fit a given, standardized genre. In many ways, it bucks the trends, refuses to be pigeonholed, and is a departure from the norm.
While "The Eyes of Grey Wolf" is indeed supposed to be a children's book, it defies description and genre in such unique ways as to make it fit for any age group. Best of all, the story is guaranteed to stay with you, despite taking up only thirty pages.
Written in a short, to-the-point, and almost poetic prose style that conjures up Native American folk tales, the book is equal parts kids book and adult literature. And the paintings? Absolutely glorious in their realistic depiction of Gray Wolf's adventure on a snowy, moonlit night. The effect of combining both the stylized writing and luminous art is an almost magical tale that could have come from Native legends.
Included at the end is a page or two with factual information on wolves, and contact information for some wolf conservation groups. Overall, an excellent book for any youngster's report on wolves, endangered species, or the environment.
The book is relatively short, but do not let that dissuade you from purchasing it. Once you've read it, you'll be glad to have "The Eyes of Grey Wolf" in your collection.
To author London and illustrator Van Zyle, I say thank you for putting this project together.

London's story is entrancing
By G. Sherman H. Morrison
By looking into Grey Wolf's entrancing yellow eyes, we are able to grasp the radiance and spirit of these magnificent animals. Grey Wolf has lost his mate to a steel trap that man had set in the forest. We hear his howling, his "untamed music." It echoes from the mountains. Through illustrations of moonlit valleys hugged by the still night air, we become part of Gray Wolf's quest. He finds a pack in night's stillness and his eyes dance with the eyes of the pack leader. A white wolf separates herself from the pack and she and Gray Wolf circle each other. "Even the trees seem to hold their breath." Then the wolves trot off across the snow and soon curl up together to wait for spring. They will make a new pack of their own. The poetic prose written for a lower elementary audience and magnificent drawings vividly depict the great beauty of the wolf. At the end of the book, the author lists many preservation groups and shows a map of the wolf's range in North America in the 1700's versus its range today. This book is a wonderful starting point to educate children about the wolf's endangered status in the lower 48 states (except Minnesota where they are threatened). There are many wolf recovery programs in the United States including the Wolf Reintroduction Program at Yellowstone.

John Lennon 101
By Sandy Frazier
Musicians, writers, artists and fans alike should read this candid biopic into the lives of John & Yoko during the prime of their lives and populariy. They were involved. They were controversial. They were naive. They were important and outspoken... and most of all, vulnerable. Anthony Fawcett was more than sympathetic... he was privileged to find himself involved at a time when the magic of John Lennon transcended who he even thought he was. Forever dispells the silly myth that Yoko, Linda or anything other than John's decision broke up the Beatles.

His Life in the 1970s
By Acute Observer
John Lennon: One Day at a Time, Anthony Fawcett

Anthony Fawcett was born in 1948 in England and studied Fine Art at Oxford. He started writing as an art critic. He lives in New York and wrote this book in 1976. Fawcett worked full time with John and Yoko running their office, organizing their daily schedule, and cataloging their writings and films (`Introduction'). Lennon had a complex and varying character (pp.10-11).

`Part One - The Man' tells how his life when he met John Lennon. It tells about "The Acorn Event", a project called "art". [Do these "art projects" raise a question about judgment?] The "avant-garde set" sounds like a collection of wealthy wastrels (p.28). "Bizarre events" (p.29). "Lollypop Art" (p.38)? Was Lennon's arrest for drugs caused by planted evidence (p.39)? Did the "Two Virgins" album show mental problems (p.40)? "Demented freaks" (p.41)? "I was stoned all the time" (p.42). John was "dropping acid almost constantly" (p.43). Did the events in "The Peace Politician" have any effect?

There were big problems in mismanagement at Apple (p.81). These money problems led to the end of the Beatles (p.89). "The Dream Is Over" tells about John's feelings. The Lennon's moved to New York in 1971 and lived in the West Village (p.119). But President Nixon personally ordered him kicked out of America (p.124). In 1976 John became a permanent resident of the US (p.149).

`Part Two - The Magic' tells about John as a musician, poet, and painter. The author is a fan of John Lennon. Others will not find it worth their time to read this book. It presents John as a deeply troubled individual, probably due to his use of drugs. Whiskey did the same job on other singers. In December 1980 a national monthly magazine printed an interview with John Lennon. They quoted him as going around Manhattan without a bodyguard. One reader knew this would make him an unprotected target, and acted on this news. Sic transit gloria mundi.

The Happiness Track: How to Apply the Science of Happiness to Accelerate Your Success, by Emma Seppala

A leading expert on health psychology, well-being, and resilience argues that happiness is the key to fast tracking our professional and personal success.

Everyone wants to be happy and successful. And yet the pursuit of both has never been more elusive. As work and personal demands rise, we try to keep up by juggling everything better, moving faster, and doing more. While we might succeed in the short term, it comes at a cost to our well-being, relationships, and, paradoxically, our productivity. In The Happiness Track, Emma Seppala, the science director of the Center for Compassion and Altruism Research and Education at Stanford University, explains that our inability to achieve sustainable fulfillment is tied to common but outdated notions about success. We are taught that getting ahead means doing everything that’s thrown at us (and then some) with razor-sharp focus and iron discipline; that success depends on our drive and talents; and that achievement cannot happen without stress.

The Happiness Track demolishes these counter-productive theories. Drawing on the latest findings from the fields of cognitive psychology and neuroscience—research on happiness, resilience, willpower, compassion, positive stress, creativity, mindfulness—Seppala shows that finding happiness and fulfillment may, in fact, be the most productive thing we can do to thrive professionally. Filled with practical advice on how to apply these scientific findings to our daily lives, The Happiness Track is a life-changing guide to fast tracking our success and creating the anxiety-free life we want.

In The Happiness Track, Emma Seppala
By Reading and Musing
In The Happiness Track, Emma Seppala, (a Ph.D. from Stanford) notes that in today's society, we strive for happiness and success, but often find both unattainable. We learn that in order to be happy, we need to be successful.

We grow up believing that we need to find a passion at a young age, focus solely on this passion, and work ourselves to the bone so that we can become masters in this field. We tell ourselves that the stress, anxiety and exhaustion that we feel as the result of our work-horse mentality, only means that we're on the right track.

But Seppala argues that the reverse is true -- that in order to be successful, we need to be happy. In order to be happy, we need to take care of ourselves; focusing on our mental well-being, taking necessary work breaks, and remaining mindful and present throughout our every day lives.

Through scientific studies, anecdotal notes, and interviews, Seppala explains just how happiness lends itself fully to success, and provides concrete methods for improving our personal day-to-day happiness factors.

My colleague loves mindful meditation. He gave me this book as a result of multiple conversations about this practice, and while this book is unlike any that I would normally choose for myself, I truly enjoyed it.

The chapters (and my thoughts on each) are as follows:

1 - Stop Chasing the Future. Seppala notes that we're taught to always be looking forward. We're never able to appreciate our achievements, because as soon as we come close to reaching our goal, we're already looking to make progress on the next goal. We miss out on the good things happening around us now.

She's right. The timelines and deadlines I've arranged for myself throughout the years are innumerable. I'm organized and I like structure, so I set goals, and deadlines in all facets of my life. As soon as I finish one thing, I have ten other tasks lined up. I never feel fully at ease in my day, because I'm always looking to make headway in endeavors I haven't yet reached. It's stressful, and I'm always tired. It's no way to live.

2 - Step Out of Overdrive. Seppala states that we need to slow down. The United States is one of the most stressed out privileged nations in the world. Our anxiety costs us billions of dollars per year. 70% of mental health doctors' visits are due to anxiety and stress. This is unfortunate, but it's not any one person's fault. It's the result of a society that values competition and around-the-clock work over our health and mental well-being.

I make jokes all the time about other people contaminating me with their "contagious" stress. Turns out though -- I'm right! When you're stressed, or anxious, your pheromones project this into the air. Others can literally catch your stress. No wonder Americans suffer from such significant mental health issues! And yet, we stigmatize those who reach out for help with a callous "Buck up. It's not that bad." No. Don't "buck up." Get help. You should feel welcome to take care of yourself without judgment. Our attitudes are conflicting and nonsensical.

Our unhealthy need for competition, and desire to always be "on" leads to absurd amounts of multi-tasking. Because we spend so much time multi-tasking, we make mistakes, and never fully commit to the task at hand. By slowing down, we'll not only make less mistakes in the work we do, but we'll enjoy each task more, and feel less aggravation and stress.

3 - Manage Your Energy. Only put your energy toward things that really matter. If the task doesn't require all of your energy, then don't give it all of your energy. Save your high intensity emotions for things that require high intensity.

4 - Get More Done by Doing More of Nothing. I found this chapter so interesting. Seppala discussed how some of the most influential and innovative people of our time came up with their life-changing ideas. Guess where their bouts of genius didn't occur? At work. In their email. In a staff meeting. Sure -- these people worked hard, and tended to their emails, but they also took time out for themselves. They golfed. They fished. They took vacations. In doing these things, in giving their minds rest, they were able to recharge and rejuvenate. Then, because their brains were awake and fully functioning, they were able to tap into their creativity, and create world-altering inventions. It makes sense.

5 - Enjoy a Successful Relationship With Yourself. Be nice to yourself. We live in a society that demands perfection -- and we're horrible to ourselves when we don't achieve it.

Think about how terrible you feel when someone constantly belittles you. Isn't it awful? So then, why constantly belittle yourself? It's not helpful. Accept your mistakes and your shortcomings, and move on.

Also, allow yourself to indulge in activities that do not play to your strengths. If you're not willing to try anything outside of your comfort zone, you're stifling your creativity.

We've created a society in which failure isn't an option. People are afraid to try new things, or to take risks. Because of this, we don't even know what amazing inventions or ideas we could be missing out on. I'm not preaching at you -- to my own detriment, my least favorite thing in the world is to fail.

6 - Understand the Kindness Edge. This was another of my favorite chapters. As we grow through life, we're taught "Look out for yourself. No one else will. Do what you need to do to get ahead. Don't worry about those you need to trample on your climb to the top."

People who follow this mindset often find themselves burned out and alone. Their learned narcissism slowly starts to make them insane. The result of this is an intense unhappiness, and often a mental breakdown.

Leaders, managers, and bosses who are kind, who take the time to listen, who worry about their employees' success, find their own success. Their employees are loyal to them, and work hard for them. Because their employees are happier to do their jobs, their work often yield incredible results.

Success is the result of kindness. I'm lucky -- because I work for this type of person. Unfortunately - he's the first boss I've had who practices this methodology.

Seppala also introduced different ways to achieve a sense of calm. She discussed different mindful meditation practices, yoga courses, art classes, breathing exercises, and nature retreats.

As someone who is anxious, busy, and feeling "behind" much of the time, this book truly resonated with me. I took from it many different activities that I plan to incorporate into my day-to-day in order to increase my daily happiness factor.

However, while I love the idea of practicing happiness and mindfulness, my concern is -- unless everyone is practicing such, will it really be possible to drive any truly positive change? For example, if you work for a boss who values overtime work, will you get fired if you say, "Nah. I'm taking today off."? I'm not sure.

Either way -- I highly recommend reading this book. For the rest of my reviews, go to readingandmusing.com

Excellent! One of the Best! Here’s my Summary and Review-
By Amp Van Zandt
This book shows you how happiness and productivity go hand in hand. It is broken up into 6 decent sized but not overwhelmingly long chapters. The author makes her case by showing how new research (and also some old research) has overturned myths about productivity and success. Here are a few samples of the myths she confronts-

Myth 1: You must work nonstop, in an all work no play life in order to be successful. The author refers to this as being in “overdrive”. In its place she gives the evidence that shows how taking breaks, having hobbies, and other forms of relaxation increase your productivity in the long haul.

Myth 2: In order to succeed, you must be your own worst critic. This myth serves as a backdrop against chapter 5, where the author makes the case for self-compassion as a profound tool to get more done, be happier, and even live longer.

These are good examples of the overall theme of the book- you don’t have to kill yourself and be miserable today, in order to be happy tomorrow or to fulfill your dreams. That living a life that makes you happy in the present can also lead to greater productivity and long-term success is a bold claim, but the case is made with such strength you have to accept it. This is one of the most thoroughly documented and research based self-help books I’ve ever read. After the final chapter, the next 30 pages are lists of all the research, interviews, and other academic books she cites for each of the 6 chapters. For this, and for the fact that this is a thoroughly enjoyable and enlightening read, I just have to give this book my highest recommendations. I’ve been studying success and productivity systems for 20 years, and this book is top of the line. It has really helped round out my perspective and knowledge about getting ahead in life.

A great practical resource for the over-driven and exhausted
By M.M.
This book is extremely well-written. Dr. Seppala successfully hits the mark on all three criteria of a timeless self-help book, namely (a) clear and easy to read, (b) containing practical, easy to follow advice (e.g., how powerful a wellness tool something as simple as deep, slow breathing can be), and (c) solid scientific evidence to back up all the advice. What makes this book truly remarkable is how Dr. Seppala packs in a treasure trove rigorous research while keeping the text consistently accessible and readable.

As an over-driven individual in a high pressure work environment, I go through cycles of really high energy, engagement in work, and productivity followed by cycles of collapse. Chapter 3, 'Managing Your Energy', has been extremely helpful to me in understanding why: apparently positive high intensity emotions such as enthusiasm have the same exhausting physiological impact as high intensity negative emotions like anger, so while high energy positive emotions are essential to happiness when they occur in small doses, chronic indulgence in them (something American society and professional cultures encourage and reward) is damaging to health. Chapter 3 has motivated me to very seriously rethink how I should manage my enthusiasm and engagement, traits I have always seen as unambiguously positive even though they contribute to regular periodic collapse. A second lesson in energy management the books discusses is the concept of 'satisficing', i.e., to maximize long-term happiness and productivity, one has to be judicious about which tasks to devote one's best effort to vs. which ones to hold back on and be just good enough. While I have known this conceptually, it was only after reading this book make a science-based case for it that I was able to hold back and do a merely good-enough job on a work project, something I have never been able to do before.

Another message that I implemented immediately in my life after reading the book is that of self-compassion. I was being asked to take on a project at work that was challenging to an unhealthy degree. I see myself as someone who, to my detriment, never backs away from a challenge, no matter how impossible. The emphasis on self-care and self-compassion in the book helped me listen to my intuition that the project was going to be injuriously stressful, and explain to my management very constructively but honestly what I needed to make the project realistic, and lo and behold, my management agreed!

The Mediocre Made Me Do It
By thirdtwin
Read the entire run but for me the character was more effective as part of the supporting cast in Gaiman's Sandman rather than a main character in his own series- I like the art but felt the story line was weak and the main character lackluster; I know most people don't share that opinion but I just couldn't get immersed in or sympathize with his struggle and character arc- I feel he worked much better as a foil for Dream and it would have been more interesting if the character was shown trying to follow through on the threat he made in the pages of the Sandman comic instead of the story arch that ended up on the pages of this.

Great comic.
By Kindle Customer
I've been reading mostly manga over the past two years, so what surprised me most about this comic (aside from the most obvious differences, ie., color, dialogue-heavy, etc.) was that the illustrators in American comics appear to be disposable, exactly opposite from the Japanese system.

The first story in this comic is illustrated by Scott Hampton who draws a beautiful, lucid version of a Mephistophelean-type, world-weary Satan bored by the absurdity & impermanence of this universe. His beauty is matched by his exquisite courtesy.

The second story is drawn by Chris Weston (I guess...it is not always clear who is responsible for character design amid all the pencillers, inkers, and colorists listed) who draws Lucifer as a thug with the expression of someone who has bitten into something really sour or is, alternatively, in need of a really good laxative.

I found Lucifer's expression jarring enough but then he has been graced with a hairstyle reminiscent of Barbie's Ken. I mean, I know Japanese illustrators are far more concerned with a character's hair than their American counterpart, but come on people, do you really think even the ex-King of Hell would settle for hair that looks like a plastic bottlecap?

Apart from these quibbles about the graphic part of the graphic novel, the story is excellent. The plot is involved but precise and never insults the reader's intelligence. I've only read this first book, but there is obviously much more to come & I'm looking forward to Lucifer's struggle with the angels & whoever else comes up. I plant to read the whole series.

Second only to Sandman
By Drektath
This is more of a review of the series as a whole rather than this individual volume.

There's nothing positive that I can say that hasn't already been said by the other five star reviewers (and a good deal of the four star reviewers). In the interest of full disclosure, I consider Gaiman's Sandman series to be the greatest sequential art/comic/graphic novel series of all time. In a bit of a catch-22, to me, Carey's Lucifer would hold that honor if Sandman didn't exist...and yet it wouldn't exist if Gaiman had never penned Sandman.

If you've read Sandman and liked it, there's a good chance this is up your alley. If you've read Sandman and hated it, this probably isn't for you unless you have a particular attachment to angelic mythology.

My only gripe is that DC hasn't issued an Absolute edition for this series.
