Fascinating! Amazing! Revealing! well worthwhile.

This book will Amaze and challenge you as you read it. For the first time, all of the dots are connected, and for the first time you will no doubt see and know the Big picture of what Jesus Christ teachings are all about. Highly recommend!

The Real Jesus Christ?

This book is excellent for its ability to take a very complex subject and simplify it. This books examines the evidence for who Jesus really was and what he really taught. I have read the Christian Bible myself eleven times along with the Jewish translation of the Old Testament and Catholic Bible. I have also studied Orthodox Christian Doctrine along with reading the new scriptures found in Nag Hammadi. Author Steve Sadleir has been able to simplify this topic and make it possible for anyone to pick up this book and understand the questions that are raised in it. The central problem is that Jesus Christ was born a Jew in Nazareth. His original disciples that became his apostles had different gospels that were not canonized by the Catholic Church. Many of these gospels were found in Nag Hammadi Egypt in modern times. The manuscripts of the gospels of Thomas, Mary, and Phillip are much older than the oldest existing manuscripts of the biblical gospels. These gospels tell a different story than the ones in the Bible, they ask the follower to look with in for heaven and that hell is created from your own thoughts, these are not physical places they are with in the mind. The human spirit is clothed with a physical body but it is not this body you are a spirit. This book tries to show the reader through the evidence that the original Jesus Christ was enlightened and his ministry was to enlighten his followers in the here and now. He was a man, not God incarnated. This myth was built up over the 300 years after his death when his words and life were mixed together with the pagan world's religions.

The author attempts to show how this message was stolen by Saul of Tarsus who went on to become the self proclaimed apostle Paul after spending time persecuting and killing the followers of Jesus. The bible itself speaks about the conflict between Paul and the original followers of Jesus, primarily James and Peter. Paul's epistles were never accepted by the original followers of Jesus, and to this day their exist Christians in the Middle East and India who do not accept Paul as an apostle. Paul was never a student of Jesus directly, nor did he learn under any of his apostles. His teachings were a mythology that he believed was inspired directly by Christ. Was it? It was more similar to the Greek and Roman God-Man Cults than anything Jewish or said by Jesus himself even in the Bible.

The next Jesus changing event was the council of Nicaea held by the Emperor Constantine in 325 A.D. The original followers of Jesus from the Middle East and the Gnostic Christians were not invited. The debate about whether Jesus was God or not ended abruptly when the bishop that believed Jesus was human was punched in the face. Constantine used the few Bishops gathered for this council to create the theology he needed to unite the empire. The word "Catholic" comes from the Greek "Kathlikos" which means universal. Constantine was able to merge his religion of Sol Invictus and the Mithran cult together with Christianity to make one church for all.

The author goes into detail explaining the historical facts of how distortions started, by who, and why. He does a great job bringing together information that I have learned from several books into one place and streamlining them into manageable information that can be understood. What the author presents are facts, many of which I have learned from other sources. It is a hard book for most Christians to read because things that they take on 100% faith are challenged and even shown to be untrue. The very core of the Church's theology of redemption is said to be incorrect. If you can read this book with an open mind and do your own research to make sure it is correct it can be very educational. The truth will set you free.

Have we been brain washed ?

The whole topic is very interesting given the fact, that to the best of my knowledge no verified written documents have ever been uncovered that were directly written by Jesus Christ himself. I found it very difficult to read this book given the years of conditioning my mind has been subject to having been raised in a society or culture very heavily influenced by individual interpretation of events and subject matter not in direct experience, especially a topic so emotionally charged and dynamic as this one. Unlike other reviews of this book I found it interesting that Mr. Sadleir was accused of drawing controversial conclusions, it seemed to me that the evidence could be considered controversial, in that it provides documented history to question our own conclusions or more aptly put conclusions drawn by others and adopted . I really appreciate the way this book presents history, that is substantiated by the best research available to date and allows you the reader to draw your own conclusions as to the message intended by Christ himself. On a side note, I am constantly amazed at how a subject apparently intended to bring unity and wholesomeness to our state of being has historically led to so much division, violence and anxiety. Given this observation I feel it necessary to see for myself the available facts and draw my own conclusions, hopefully free of self serving ideals.

Boxed set, yet incomplete!

Collected Letters of C.S. Lewis - Box Set

Just a warning for future customers: I ordered and received a boxed set of two volumes of C.S. Lewis's letters in paperback format in the reasonable assumption that it was complete, but it was not. The work was published in three volumes (I family letters, II books, broadcasts and the war, and III Narnia, Cambridge and Joy), but someone along the way (certainly NOT the bookseller I bought it from) found it necessary to join the two first volumes in a boxed set, with the misleading suggestion that some abbridged version in two volumes was offered. I bought it for what I thought was a good price, to find out that I had to order the remaining third volume separately. It still baffles me how anyone can publish two of any three volume set in one box, but here it is. There was simply not enough information in the Amazon Basin to warn me of this inconsistency.
I do not know if there are boxed sets containing all three volumes. In any case, BEWARE OF THIS INCOMPLETE CAT IN THE BAG.

What a life, what a mind, what a faith

CS Lewis and his work come alive in a new and very personal way, thanks to Walter Hooper's impressive efforts in compiling CSL's extant correspondence. For the Christian, Lewis's letters become more interesting and relevant after his conversion (i.e. when volume 2 begins), but even in volume 1 there are hints of what is to come, and also the reassurances that Lewis is a fallible, sinful man who has, like all of us, much to overcome.

Two of the greatest impressions on me: first, his generosity of spirit, giving advice and expressing humility while doing it, to almost anyone who would write him asking for help. Second, the superiority of learning from such a man and such a system as existed in Oxford and the other great universities, where personal contact and learning from personalities was the norm, rather than the poor substitutes we have today with so-called "social networking" and "online learning."

This collection has much to offer to anyone interested in Lewis as an educator, as a literary critic, as a novelist, as a poet, as a Christian apologist, or simply as a Christian. Most highly recommended. In fact, I will be giving this as a gift to people I cherish.

Collected Letters of C.S. Lewis - Boxed set

The letters are wonderful in gaining insights into the person of C.S. Lewis. They are letters to friends and family with more humor than I expected. If you're looked for something in the way of short "bed-time" stories, this is it. Hours and hours of relaxing, yet, informative reading. I recommend it to any and all C.S. Lewis fans.

The choice of the thirsty for application.

This exercise-filled deterministic optimization course book was my introduction to linear, integer and non-linear programming, and also taught me a lot of what I know about general linear algebra. It (the book) can be very hard to read for the novice, and should be considered a source of raw practice problems and examples. In lack of substance this is often a resort to some authors, but Murty has done it well. The examples are widely useful and interesting and should be considered a goldmine for any professor teaching optimization or trying to compile an exam for graduate students. To digest it's bulk text one should be familiar whith the language of mathematics in order not having to stop to breathe or having to go for a walk every once in a while.

A Solid Sanskrit Grammar

This is probably the best all-round textbook for learning Sanskrit. Its closest
competitors are Goldman's "Devavanipraveshika" and Coulson's "Teach Yourself
Sanskrit". Maurer's work improves upon both in several ways: 1.It treats Sanskrit
in its Indo-European linguistic context, which will be a reason that many will
come to the study of the language. Previously Mayrhofer's "Sanskrit Grammar" or
Burrow's "Sanskrit Language", neither of which are pedagogic, had to be consulted
by a student interested in historical linguistics. 2.It presents the basic
grammar thoroughly with plentiful vocabulary and practice material for the
beginner. The reasons that prevent me from giving it five stars are these:
1. Price 2. Somewhat uninspired selection of readings. After all, with the
largest world literature, Maurer could have done better than relying on the old war-horse of "Nala and Damayanti", which continues the tradition of
Lanman's "Sanskrit Reader" of a century ago. Goldman, based as it is on the
"Ramayana" excels in this respect, as does Coulson which builds up to an
appreciation of Kalidasa. Few students these days will be satisfied with the
soupy Nala tale when the Bhagavad Gita, the Kama Sutra, the Upanishads and so
many more can be read in its place. Nonetheless, this is a highly recommended book for those who want a sensible, traditional grammar.

Best book for beginners

I teach Sanskrit in Canada, and I've tried using many different textbooks. My goal is to give the student a basic overview of the major components of Sanskrit as quickly as possible, and teach further using authentic Sanskrit literature. This book does exactly that. Instead of teaching grammar topics in the conventional order, it introduces advanced topics right at the beginning in a simplified way, so that students get used to recognizing their usage in context. It also has more thorough explanations of grammar topics than any book I've seen, and uses familiar English examples for comparison. excellent primer

i've been studying sanskrit on my own for 25 years and i own about a half dozen primers. this is an excellent primer, lots of useful charts and information. the pace of the lessons is reasonable for beginners, though wish the translation exercises were worked out maybe at the back of the book so student could check his/her work. two non-content problems: at $65 it's too pricey, and because of the number of pages (ca 850) the binding is thick and it's hard to keep the book open when working the exercises.
